COMMERCE, CA — Residents can learn about black holes, galaxies, and the evolution of the universe during a free astronomy presentation at the Rosewood Neighborhood Library this week.

The Commerce Public Library will host "Cosmos & Coffee with Nicole Sanchez" from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 17, at the Rosewood Neighborhood Library, 5655 Jillson St. The event is open to adults 18 and older.

Sanchez is a National Science Foundation MPS-Ascend Postdoctoral Fellow with a joint appointment at the California Institute of Technology and Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, according to her website. She is also a member of the international N-body Shop Collaboration, where she uses computer simulations to study how galaxies form and evolve.

During the presentation, Sanchez will discuss her research on galaxy evolution and explain how supermassive black holes influence the gas surrounding galaxies, helping astronomers better understand how the universe changes over time.

Outside the lab, Sanchez is also the lead singer of Night Lunch, an all-astronomer rock band based in Seattle.

Registration is open for the free event. More information is available through the Commerce Public Library.
