Mayor’s Update September 2025: Chavez urges Yes on Proposition 50

Hello BG residents,

As we close out summer, I want to take a moment to recognize the importance of Labor Day, which we celebrated just a few days ago. This holiday has always been one of my favorites because it honors working people. Having organized alongside fast food workers, janitors, and security guards with SEIU, I know firsthand the power of workers standing together.

Bell Gardens was built by families who worked long hours in tough conditions to give the next generation a better future. Let’s continue to celebrate the dignity of work and the importance of organized labor in creating stronger, fairer communities.

At our last council meeting, we recognized El Pollito Panaderia, which has shared its bread with BG since 1978. El Pollito was founded by Maria Alicia Perez, who immigrated from Jalisco in 1951 and worked at her aunt’s bakery in East LA before opening her own shop. Its warm, authentic flavors are a source of comfort and memories, and it remains a cherished gathering spot that reflects the contributions of immigrant families.

Last month, we also honored the Anaya family, owners of Anaya's Service Center, which has served BG for more than 34 years. Their high-quality automotive services have created jobs, supported our economy, and kept families on the road. We’re grateful for their dedication and proud to count them among our city’s business community.

Vote Yes on 50!

As Mayor of Bell Gardens, I’m urging every resident to stand up and vote “YES” on Proposition 50 by November 4.

Prop 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act, is California’s response to Trump and Republican leaders in Texas who are rigging congressional maps to steal seats before a single vote is cast in next year’s midterm elections.

If red states are allowed to manipulate the system unchecked, they could hand Republicans control of the House and silence millions of voters. Prop 50 gives California the power to fight back by adjusting our districts to counter their partisan gerrymanders, leveling the playing field and defending democracy.

Republican control of the House means more lawless raids on immigrant communities and more devastating cuts to vital services like healthcare and education.

Trump knows he can’t win fair and square, so he’s stacking the deck. Prop 50 is our way to fight fire with fire, making sure Californians aren’t left defenseless against MAGA extremists trying to strip away healthcare, workers’ rights, and immigrant protections.

On November 4, you’ll have the power to protect our democracy at the ballot box. Voting is simple: check your registration, mail in your ballot early or head to your local polling place, and make sure you mark “YES” on Prop 50

Together, we can send a strong message that Bell Gardens and this state will not stand by while Trump and his cronies rig the system: vote YES on Prop 50!

Park News

The city was ecstatic to “un-leash” its first-ever dog park in August at Florence Place Dog Park, 6945 Emil Ave. Watching residents and their pets enjoy a space built just for them on opening night was a great reminder that when we invest in parks, we invest in the heart and soul of Bell Gardens.

For years, families had to travel to neighboring cities for an off-leash park. Now, right here at home, we have a dedicated space—open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.—with separate areas for large and small dogs, agility equipment, water fountains, and plenty of room to play.

We’re also excited to share that the new Ford Park Aquatics Center will soon feature a fully equipped fitness room with treadmills, weights, and more for the public to enjoy.

And with the recent heat wave, a cooling center remains open at Veterans Park (6662 Loveland St.) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sept. 5. I want to thank our staff for making sure residents have a safe place to escape the heat.

El Grito of Independence

One of my all-time favorite yearly events, El Grito of Independence, is returning to Bell Gardens on Friday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Veterans Park!

Come celebrate El Grito 2025 with us: enjoy live music, food trucks, folklórico dance, and our Art Walk featuring local artists. It’s a night of culture, community, and tradition that you won’t want to miss.

Bring the whole family as we honor Mexican Independence right here in Bell Gardens!

As always, you can reach me directly at (323) 305-4567 or shoot me an email at Jchavez@bellgardens.org.

Until next time BG,

Jorgel Chavez

Mayor, City of Bell Gardens
