Bell Gardens, CA – Skaters and music lovers of all ages are invited to come through to the Bell Gardens Skate Park this Thursday, May 15, for the third annual Skate Jam.

The family-friendly event is free and has become a yearly celebration of the city’s vibrant skate scene.

Organized by the Bell Gardens Recreation Department in collaboration with BGArts, a local arts collective, and Councilmember Marco Bárcena, Skate Jam brings together street culture, alternative music, and community.

“We spend a lot of money and effort on sports and very traditional forms of recreation, but we kind of push our skater community to the side,” Bárcena, a skater himself, said at last year’s Skate Jam. “This is an opportunity for us to do something special for kids that have a different dynamic at home, that are a little bit more independent, maybe don’t rely so much on their parents to recreate and have fun in the streets.”

“This is for skaters, but I also tried to make sure that we cater to the entire family,” he said.

Skate Jam runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bell Gardens Skate Park, located at 6645 Florence Place. Attendees can expect a packed evening of skateboarding and BMX riding, live music, vendors, prizes and more.

This year’s lineup includes DJ sets from legendary EDM artist DJ Irene, DJ Rod Chrolon, and a live performance by cumbia-fusion rockers El Conjunto Nueva Ola

Vendors include 88 Skate Supply, Warning Skate Shop, Mainline Skate Shop, Top Heavy Entertainment, Karma Grip Tape, 3043 Skate Shop and Un-Modern Skate Shop.

Additional support comes from SPIRITT Family Services, the LA Galaxy Star Squad, and Bridge to Skate, a nonprofit.

Local artist Juan Galindo (Sick Taste Art) will also return this year to table at the event.
