The Downey City Library, located at 11121 Brookshire Ave., is set to host a free screening of “Persepolis” (PG-13) on July 9 as part of its Theater Thursdays: International Cinémathèque series in the Cormack Room.

“Persepolis” follows a young girl coming of age before, during, and after the Iranian Revolution as she navigates family, rebellion, war, and self-discovery. Through its distinctive black-and-white animation, the film explores themes of identity, exile, and resilience.

Based on the autobiographical graphic memoir by Marjane Satrapi, the film offers a personal perspective on political repression under both the Shah's authoritarian monarchy and the Islamic Republic through the eyes of an ordinary Iranian family.

The screening runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion.

Admission is free and open to teens and adults. No registration is required.
