MAYWOOD, CA — A man was shot in the leg following an argument with another man in Maywood late Sept. 10, authorities said.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded around 11:30 p.m. to the 4400 block of Slauson Avenue, where an adult man had been shot in the leg, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The victim was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Authorities said the victim and suspect, both described as transients, apparently got into a verbal argument that escalated into the shooting.

As of Sept. 16, the male suspect remained at large, and the firearm used in the shooting had not been recovered, according to LASD. The investigation remains ongoing.

Los Angeles County firefighters were dispatched at 12:31 a.m. Sept. 11 to the 4400 block of Slauson Avenue. Fire officials said crews were directed by sheriff’s personnel to stage until the scene was safe and were cleared to enter at 12:41 a.m.

A video posted to the Citizen app shows a sheriff’s unit blocking an intersection near Slauson and Atlantic avenues as an ambulance turns from Atlantic onto Slauson, heading toward the Yoshinoya. A helicopter can also be heard.

“Apparently, somebody got shot right here,” a person said in the video while showing the police response near the intersection. The person also said deputies were moving people gathered nearby out of the area.

LASD said additional information is being withheld to protect the ongoing investigation.
