DOWNEY, CA – A man in his 30s is expected to survive after suffering a head injury early Thursday morning near Lakewood Boulevard and Vista Del Rosa Street in what police say may have been an attempted equipment and wire theft.

A graphic video posted to Instagram by user @bassheadjoey appears to show the injured man lying on the sidewalk and bleeding from the head moments after reportedly falling from an electrical pole near the intersection. The nearly two-minute video shows the man conscious and moving slightly while a witness describes the incident off camera. Nearby electrical wires can also be seen on the ground near the scene.

According to the Downey Police Department, officers responded around 12:30 a.m. on May 14 to assist the Downey Fire Department regarding a downed pole and exposed wires in the area.

When firefighters arrived, they found an unconscious man lying in the street with what appeared to be a head injury, police said.

“Upon further investigation, it appears the male may have attempted to steal equipment and wiring,” Downey Police Lt. Richard Garcia said in a statement.

The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, according to police.

The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives are reviewing the incident for potential criminal charges.
